Fred,
Probably depends on how far these folks want to walk/bike. There are
city buses that run to/from North Campus until about 10 on weekdays
(Downtown Circulator, Pawtucketville, and Broadway buses), so getting
home from anywhere downtown wouldn't be too much of a problem if they
got an apartment near North Campus. North Campus isn't that close,
walking-wise, to the train station, though.
If these guys are going to be taking the train to Boston a fair amount,
living near the train station may be a better choice, as the LRTA buses
only have evening hours M-F. If there's something near South Common
('Back Central' neighborhood), that would be an easy walk to the
train/bus station and also an easy bike ride to North Campus or to the
grocery store.
I can't comment on which neighborhood is a safer place to be, as I've
only been here a year or so. Hopefully others on the list can shed
light on this. Since your colleague will not have a car, proximity to a
grocery store might also be something to think about. Carrying
groceries on the bus is a pain, and limits shopping hours (though the
bus does go by the Broadway St. Market Basket until well after closing
time on weekdays).
