Canal Stewards:
I know this is short notice, but I have been given conflicting
information about this event. While I know it is on a weekday, I hope
that come of you can make it so that we will show our strength to Marty
Meehan, Boott Hydro, and the Parks. We wanted the Canals' to be clean
and be in the news. This will accomplish both.
I have been instructed to arrive about 9:30, and bring our award with me
so we can get some pictures. I pray that all of you who are able, will
come to this news conference and get in some pictures.
Below is a press release issued by the Park:

Congressman Meehan, City Officials, Lowell National Historical Park
Superintendent and Boott Hydropower to unveil a major effort focused on
cleaning up Lowell's canals and Canalway system

Lowell, MA -- Congressman Martin Meehan will unveil a major effort in
Lowell focused on cleaning up Lowell's canals and Canalway on Friday,
October 6, 2006 at 10:00am. The announcement will be held at the "Swamp
Locks" area of the Lowell canal system (south-west end of the Lowell
National Historical Park parking lot on Dutton Street),

With an interest in enhancing the appearance of the canals and Canalway,
along with fostering an ongoing program of their upkeep, Congressman Meehan
has engaged the City of Lowell, Boott Hydropower, Inc., and Lowell National
Historical Park to coordinate a canal clean-up for Saturday, October 28,
2006. In recent times when the canals have been drained of water, there has
been continuing attention to the unsightly impression the debris
accumulation there creates. Also at issue is the constant appearance of
litter on the walkways, known as the Canalway, which provide public access
along these historic waterways. Boott Hydropower, Inc. plans to draw down
the canals during this event, with City and Park support of equipment and
staffing to be complemented by volunteers recruited for these projects.

"Lowell's canals are a major asset to the community's identity as well as a
historical engineering marvel" said Congressman Meehan. "The dialogue we
have begun will bring all interested parties together so we can work
long-term to keep Lowell's canals as an asset for the residents and
visitors to the city."

WHO:

Congressman Marty Meehan, City Mayor William Martin, City Manager Bernie
Lynch, Lowell National Historical Park Superintendent Michael Creasey,
Boott Hydropower, Inc., and interested organizations and individuals

WHAT:

Announcement of major effort focused on cleaning up Lowell's canals and
Canalway system

WHEN:

Friday, October 6, 2006

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

WHERE:

Swamp Locks location of the Lowell canal system

Note: Please call the Lowell National Historical Park at 978-275-1700 if
you need directions.

Also, Swamp Locks may have some activity due to the arrival of a crane
and some divers. If so, the press conference is going to go across the
street to Mack Plaza (where you get the trolley near the locomotive).

In other news, we had our final 'scheduled' clean up last weekend.
It's been a strange season with the water as high as its been, but we
slogged through it. We also had a couple of fun fellowship events,
which included a trip to Pawtucket RI to see the Park down there (those
people are under the mistaken impression that the industrial revolution
started there!); and the Lowell National Historic Parks LCC Volunteers
picnic. We were lucky enough to have Bill Rawnsley do the barbequeing
('lucky' means I didn't have to do it), and we had a wonderful time.

There is going to be a drain down from Oct. 26 - 28. The first 2 days
will be for heavy tractors to remove the larger detritus. However, on
Saturday the 28th, Volunteers are welcome in the canals. Gloves, hard
hats, and tall rubber boots are the safety uniform of the day. I will
let you all know the time, location, and general information as soon as
I have it.
Thanks!
Bill Moreau
