He told us want he wanted in our next grant application. Karen took careful notes. When they are compiled, I'll call Phil and go over them again to be sure we got it all. (or he shared all) He was clear that any plan that had Jericho Road's stamp approval/participation We also seperately met with Jodi & 2 new (to us) JR volunteers. They're both experienced with JR and in starting companies. ###### When employees give themselves company equipment and labor, it's always a good idea to touch base with the Boss. I'm going to take a 3 year old 160G HD and a 4+ year old CD-ROM drive. I'm going to take Mike's labor to pull the CD-ROM drive out of a PC carcass. The project is to setup a new home backup system. If it goes well, We'll use the same software for a new backup system for the lab. I'll also use 5-15G of disc at the lab for offisite backup for my personal backup stuff. (and will continue store lab's off site backups @ my house) I'm giving the Lab a 2 year old working CD burner and for some time have been giving the lab bandwidth and electricy for our 3rd DNS server. ####### In the finances presented to the board, I had $4,400 in the "contracted" column for "donations designated for Mike wage" "Contracted" is miss leading word. We don't have this in pledges, but I am confident that if things go as they are I can raise it. The actual figure should be 3,300 for fiscal year 08/09 ####### Karen provided this link http://www.idealware.org/articles/opensource_vendor.php From karen at karenzgoda.org Mon Dec 8 00:15:56 2008 From: karen at karenzgoda.org (Karen Zgoda) Date: Mon, 8 Dec 2008 00:15:56 -0500 Subject: [CSL board] Reminder: Exec Cmte Call 12/9 Message-ID: Folks -- This is a reminder for officers, Dan, and whoever else is able to join us for the executive committee call this Tuesday, December 9th from 6:30-7:30pm. I have some suggestions. Re: the opening paragraph, agencies will still need in-house guides. MVHub doesn't replace them; it supplements them. I would re-write the 2nd sentence as something like: We centralize and maintain this key information about community resources, allowing agencies and citizens to be more effective in finding each other. My next comment has to do with Free and Open Source Software. FOSS is mentioned in 3 separate places in this one-pager. I am not sure how much people at large care about this. It is somewhat of a long story as to why FOSS is a benefit to a non-profit agency. The story is yet more complex in the age of Google and other free-but-not-OSS software systems. The difference between software that is free because you aren't asked to pay for it (e.g., Gmail) and FOSS is pretty subtle. Basically people just want software that works. That is a tangible benefit. My third comment has to do with the overall document. Is this a statement about the CSL, or a statement of MVHub? It is not clear. The main head of the doc is MVHub, but there is The CSL addr at the top, and a CSL byline at the bottom. Maybe this could be fixed with a sentence somewhere that reads, "MVHub is the flagship project of The Community Software Lab." Re: the FOSS stuff, my specific suggestion is to mention it once and not three times. I thought that there was a circular reasoning in the third sentence about multiple agencies. It would help to clarify it. It may read better if you bring together the two sentences, for example: Instead of multiple agencies spending precious time and money creating and updating their own resource guides, MVHub centralizes and maintains this information about community resources efficiently, helping residents, social workers, and other human service workers be more effective in finding each other.... I thought the benefits side could also be streamlined, highlighting key words and removing redundant ones. Hope this helps. The odds are good the calendar won't end quickly because making a responsible decision will take more work in the short term than letting things stand. Before deciding if we want to shutdown or not: 1) I'll email a request for comment to calendar posters. 2) Take a complete look at the logs/reports http://calendar.mvhub.com/reports/ 3) Talk to our board (they are ultimately the boss) Right now the motivations for ending the calendar are: 1) laziness/selfishness approving events takes about a hour a week but we at the CSL getting bored with it. Plus the distraction/disruption is bigger than the actual time. The two other times we've had other groups approve events, it's been much more painful following up when it doesn't get done than it is to do it ourselves. For security/stability we should upgrade this is about an 8 hour project. 2) Sense that relative to other stuff we do, the calendar isn't that useful --your email is evidence I'm wrong. 3) Lack of resources, We're gotting zero $ for this. This wouldn't be a problem, if I didn't have doubts about the usefulness. We do lots of other stuff for love. FYI: I can write PSAs and send them out, when we are ready, calendar or not. As a matter of fact, since I have probably written hundreds of spots/PSAs in my time in radio, I usually dispense with press releases and just send each station a PSA with a cover letter; sometimes a follow up phone call or two. Works like a charm, about 98% of the time... Should I volunteer this service to other non-profits? What about a workshop? Do you think that folks would be interested in that kind of thing?
