From dan at thecsl.org Tue Sep 16 11:34:33 2008 From: dan at thecsl.org (Dan MacNeil) Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2008 11:34:33 -0400 Subject: [CSL board] OC Goals for October 08 meeting Message-ID: <48CFD209.9070901@thecsl.org> I've been talking w/ a few folks off-list... Martha writes in response to my clever yet humble thoughts: > I like Dan's idea about coming up with 8 goals > for October. Thanks Dan for this suggestion and > for offering to draft some goals. Let's all stay > in touch over the next few weeks to work on > tightening stuff up. My thought was: A lightweight process tends to get used: For October's board meeting, Let's have 8 goals: 2 set by board for board to achieve 2 set by Suran for board to achieve 2 set by board for Suran to achieve 2 set by Suran for Suran to achieve Of course, other people get to propose/set goals.. The two board set board goals I propose are: 1) We reach agreement with Rich on % ODB revenues to go for OC overhead. 2) Suran gets a light weight , but formal review 5 bullet points "good", 5 bullet points "short of perfection." The two board set board goals I propose for Suran are: 1) Suran's provides plausible plan for covering spring revenue needs. 2) Suran has handshake w/ (4) partners for fall OC conference or clear "no" clarity from (4) partners. Presenting a plan to the list before October meeting gives people a chance to offer preliminary feedback and revise plan into plausability before big deadline. Suran's self set goals are: _____????? _____????? Suran's goals for board are: _____????? _____????? Of course, other people get to propose/set goals.. Of course silence == assent. Dan introduced James Grenier to us and gave a summary of things we are working on for Jim to understand our goals and how we hope to attain them. We need to develop a business plan in order to form partnerships with other local non ?profits like LTC so that when we ask for money or grants we appear with some credibility. Karen also suggested we develop a structured goal plan moving forward so that no matter who or what happens there is a structure that can be followed. Included in this will be to make sure that Dan has at least a living wage. This has to be recorded and transparent. We should be organized on ?Paper? and that will allow us to demonstrate to foundations and other funding groups we are pliable. Important to fundraising is to have a set of ?Talking Points? in order to approach groups or individuals that might be sympathetic to our cause. It was suggested that perhaps we should involve the board in fundraising by making a commitment to spend x amount of hours in asking for money. This could be done alongside Dan or in groups. Fact sheets and brochures were mentioned along with press releases. It was decided: (Dan will ask everyone for money for Mike) 1. Develop a fact sheet 2. Create a pitch 3. There is much potential for growth for services like MVHUB, so this document will help us describe those services, give us information to leave to potential clients and donors/funders, and serve as a list of helpful points for board members when they do CSL sales pitches. I have copied the current draft below. We are hoping to have this draft refined within the next 1-2 weeks so we need your help. Please review this draft and give your feedback: what did you like/dislike? What would you add/subtract? Other? Thanks! ...Karen Karen Zgoda, MSW, LCSW Doctoral Student Boston College karen at karenzgoda.org http://www.karenzgoda.org MVUB SACRED BULLET POINTS http://mvhub.com: Is easy to use Is up to date Produces measurable results Is free software Can be maintained inexpensively Instead of navigating through several screens of check boxes or memorizing a taxonomy, MVHub users enter search terms in English. For contrast see: http://bostonresourcenet.org http://www.essexcountyyouth.org/resourcedirectory9.html Every Agency and program listed in mvhub gets an email every six months asking them to update or confirm their mvhub entries. Update times are logged so we know that 80% of the entries in mvhub are up to date within 6 months. Every search is logged. We have the reports to prove that have made 4,000 referals to services in Lowell Massachusetts in the last year alone. Because Mvhub is free software, licensed under the GNU GPL, any (technical) person can download it, modify it to suit their purposes and run their own directory of community services. The only restriction is that if people re-distribute modified copies of our software, they must make their improvements available to everyone. If an agency or program fails to respond to the automated email reminding them to update their entry, a human being must call the agency. Right now this work is handled by volunteers. If we had to pay $25/hr for this maintenance, it would cost $1 per referral. This is roughly 1/10th the cost per referral budgeted by the Vermont 211 system From peterbull at gmail.com Fri Sep 26 10:05:54 2008 From: peterbull at gmail.com (Peter Bull) Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2008 10:05:54 -0400 Subject: [CSL board] Feedback needed In-Reply-To: <5BA09115-2CF8-43AE-92D6-8F73EAD0D475@karenzgoda.org> References: <5BA09115-2CF8-43AE-92D6-8F73EAD0D475@karenzgoda.org> Message-ID: <58c070500809260705i7aa5fdc2i6307b6779d324738@mail.gmail.com> What I don't see in these bullet points, and what I think a doc like this absolutely needs to lead with, is a clear, concise explanation of what MVHUB is, and what it can do for you and your community. A brief statement of a problem ("...in many communities, services and the people who need them have trouble connecting...") and why MVUB is the solution to that problem ("MVHUB can provide a searchable, up-to-date directory of services that are available in your community"). A couple other points: * NPOs and providers of social services often lack the resources to effectively market themselves (is this too meta? or are we breaking the cycle with this doc?) and MVHUB can provide that ability to many organizations in one place. * A mention of Free Software and the GPL is good and important, but I wonder if it needs to go into so much detail. Is this document marketing MVHUB itself, or is it marketing the CSL's ability to set up an MVHUB system for your community? A city government type might see that line about downoading and installing the software, call Jim down in IT and tell him he should look into it (he probably won't, IT is usually too busy), and that might be the end of it. With that in mind, there should be a call to action -- if the reader is interested in MVHUB for their community, it should be clear who to contact or where to go for more info.
