I could have gotten an automatic 90 day extension if I had filed for it before Nov 15th. The penalty for filing late is $20 per day. From my phone conversation with the IRS, they will get the 990 and then access a penalty. We can then appeal the penalty. Official guidance is here on appeals http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=139227,00.html I am now completing our 990, I expect have it finished today or tomorrow. We have the cash to pay the penalty, but it will suck. Appealing CC Niki Tsongas may help. Sorry for this huge screw-up. In her letter of support Jodi Delibertis of Jericho Road wrote: "In my role as Program Director, I have an opportunity to see many boards at work; CSL?s board is one of the most engaged, hard-working nonprofit boards I have observed." For writing, re-writing and helpful criticism, thanks to board members: Jim Grenier Fred Martin John Wooding Karen Zgoda For editing, thinking, user interviews, helpful criticism, thanks to Jericho folks: Wade Rubinstein Bob Rosenbaum For connecting us to Wade & Bob and interjecting some helpful facts on the differences between for and non-profit accounting thanks to: Jodi DeLibertis For careful edits and helpful criticism, Thanks to: Laura MacNeil Melissa Carino Gregg Crouteau I'd say we had reasonable chances of getting some part of the $60K we asked for. -- If I was Phil Hall, I'd give the money on the condition we met our FY 08/09 fund raising goals (12K) We are still (slowly) doing the business planning. Foundations like that sort of thing and Jericho Road knows more than one foundation. More important it is useful for us to figure out stuff like we are selling to community based organizations not state government or that our niche is getting the users to do the work instead of highly trained call center operators. PAPERWORK I should finish the 990 tomorrow. the state attorney general report this week and the 3rd Q 941 this week. ---This is all the outstanding government paperwork. Having a treasurer who is more than a placeholder might be good. In theory, if I keep screwing this stuff up, the IRS could come and sell board member's house to pay the fines. FINANCES Detailed reports will follow. Highlights: $2K in cash $16-21K in receivables this quarter. $10-12k goes to me $7K goes to pay VISTA fees in July/Aug 3.6K goes to pay MIke FUND RAISING / paying Mike We (mostly me) have raised about $3700 in cash and pledges since September. This is more than we've raised in the past 4 years. The Career Center is kicking in money to pay Mike through April We have enough money to pay Mike through the summer. So far we have zero corporate sponsors. So far the annual appeal (to another organization's list) has brought in zero $. Given the other stuff we have to do, I'm not going to be able to do much more fund raising. GOALS (jan-june) 1st quarter 1) VISTA recruiting 2) get software infrastrucure set 3) meet CDBG requuirements 4) make northshoreport.org people overwhelmed with joy 5) finish moving people off our servers. We've gotten by for 6 months without a VISTA, but it has slowed us. If we are now about making and "selling" good software and data, there is a bunch of stuff, that needs to happen to make the software easier to improve. IF they don't have a usable starting point on Feb 12, our friends on the North Shore aren't going to be happy. Unhappy people don't pay. If we don't don't conduct 7 usibility tests before June, we'll lose the CDBG money and will find it hard to get more. not staff GOALS 1) fundraising We have enough money to do what we wan to do (except pay me big bucks) We collect about 20K if I actually write software and do usability testing. I'm not going to do much fundraising between now and June. Moving to to the next level (paying more people / doing more work) will require fundraising. --If we don't raise 12K before June, odds are pretty good Parker won't give us $60K Until June and a (possible) fund raising VISTA, the board is pretty much the only fund raising resource we have.
